Under the supervision of the Public Works Superintendent, the Heavy Duty Mechanic carries out journeyman functions in the mechanic service, maintenance and repair of trucks, cars, tractors, hydraulic equipment, punchers, aerators, chainsaws, utility trailers and lawn mowing equipment (including the sharpening, adjusting and rebuilding of reels); makes recommendations as to the most effective means of maintaining/repairing vehicles and equipment and controls cost and quality of work contracted out; establishes and maintains effective preventive maintenance program and instructs equipment operators in proper care and maintenance techniques and practices.
