The Communications Specialist reports to the Senior Manager, Communications and will support the Fundraising Communications team by developing a variety of written communications materials, conducting proactive and reactive media and public relations activities in support of our fundraising campaigns and contributing to our in-house storytelling program. This role is ideal for a results-driven communicator who has strong relationship building skills and experience in both PR and media relations.
WHAT YOU’LL BE DOING
Develop a variety of compelling, donor centric earned media materials such as key messages, media pitch notes, releases, tool kits, and advisories
Act as a communications advisor for internal stakeholders providing advice and recommendations on communications strategies and tactics
Plan and execute media relations plans and PR as required
Interview, write and edit compelling story content as part of our in-house storytelling program
Analyze campaign results and contribute to overall campaign feedback
Manage ongoing relationships with internal and external stakeholders
Manage one direct report
Support the Senior Manager, Communications in the planning and execution of communications projects
Provide issues management and crisis communications support when required
Provide ad-hoc support to the fundraising communications team
what we are looking for:
Post-secondary degree or diploma in communications, public relations, journalism or related field and 3 to 5 years of experience in media relations or communications, or an equivalent combination of education and experience
Positive, can-do attitude and self-motivated with the ability to work well independently and as part of a team
Experience writing communications strategies and tactics, including media relations and public relations
Strong organizational, time management, project management, problem-solving and analytical skills
Flexibility, resourcefulness, resiliency and the willingness and capacity to produce quality results under pressure and to deadline
Experience with issues management and a proven ability to present creative solutions to challenges
Excellent written (knowledge of CP style), listening and oral skills
Commitment to interpersonal skills, tact and diplomacy
Prior experience with media monitoring (MRP, Cision, InfoMart) required
Microsoft Word, Excel, PowerPoint and SharePoint experience required
Experience with managing a direct report a strong asset
Experience in a health-related environment, cancer organization or in non-profit setting is an asset
Experience supporting fundraising professionals an asset
